Inspiration for a family holiday in Summer

ranoutofnames · 01/01/2014 21:00

Am really struggling with ideas for our Summer holiday this year. We have been to the US and Mexico several times so would want a change.

We love beaches and sea life but are not fly and flop for a fortnight types - maybe some relaxation for a week but then we get itchy feet.

Any ideas please for a 2 week holiday? We are a family of 3 - DS is 6. Thanks

Barbados. One of our best family holidays. Or on the other end of the spectrum, Cornwall, also another big hit.

Our best summer holidays have been a few days in a hotel near a beach so we totally relax and then a week long cruise with lots of activities and sightseeing.

Was just going to suggest a Disney med cruise! Lovely ship, lots to see and then a week on a beach.

Love Disney Magic so much, best holiday ever.

Thailand. Bangkok is crazy but fun, you can ride on boats down the canals and backwaters of the city and see people just going about their business.

You can go out and ride elephants. We bottle fed a baby monkey!

And then a beach resort. We went to Koh Samui, which was nice but more commercialised than I'd have liked.

Greece - so much to see and do with sun, sea, sand and souvlaki thrown in!

If you want a beach type holiday try a boat with crew based in the British Virgin Islands. The best beaches ever and great snorkelling. You can then stay on an island for a week too, eg Virgin Gorda or Tortola. Alternatively you could look at California if you have not been already. Good whaling trips from Monterey and other harbours further South. Lots to see and lots of beaches. We love Carmel and Big Sur. Maybe consider Canada, not big on beaches, but big on scenery. Alaska big on scenery too with bears a good bet in late August plus whales. Cruising works well here. Thailand could be great but check political situation which is not great at the moment. Vietnam may be better. Costa Rica would be a top choice too. Lots of interesting things to see and lovely beaches too. Peru and Ecuador are good places to visit in August and the rainforest is amazing. Happy planning! If you are interested in any of above I would be happy to let you have more details.

I did a twin centre holiday to Rio and then onto to stay in Argentina near Iguassa Falls with the DC and that was a great trip. The beaches in Rio are beautiful with lots going on and you can fit it some amazing sightseeing including two cable cars up sugar loaf mountain and cog train to see The Christ statue (lifelong ambition). Then in Argentina we stayed in an excellent rain forest lodge place and visited both sides of the falls, the bird park in Brazil, Wanda mines in Argentina and a trip to Paraguay. This would work best in August after the world cup has ended.

Wow would love details of that trip creamycooler. What would I need to budget for family of four and who did you book with?W

I booked it myself, ba flights to Rio, I think An airline called TAP or TAM to iguassa ( Brazilian side) then taxi across the border to Argentina. We then had the driver for four days to drop us anywhere we wanted. I chose the hotels though lots of research and I thinkni booked Brazil direct and Argentian one through Expedia. The trip cost 7.5k and we redeemed some BA points which took about £700 of the flights. Rio was incredibly expensive and Argentina really good value for money. We got taxis everywhere in Rio and ate out in a different restaurant every lunch and dinner. We booked one trip, a jeep trip into rio rainforest before we left and I just posted lots of questions on trip advisor and lots of people answered with itenary/days out suggestions. I also did a simular thing for a Cape Town trip with DC.

Tuscany? There are some lovely beaches there but there are also so many places of interest to visit.

ranoutofnames · 03/01/2014 21:17

There are some fabulous ideas on here, thank you. I would love to go to California or Canada as I want to see whales but DH wants to travel elsewhere. July doesn't tend to be a good time to visit Asia and Brazil is off the cards I think due to the World Cup. So I'm still very undecided!
