Short break to Rome in May?

My mum is 65 in May next year and has always wanted to go to Rome. I'd like to be able to take her for 2 nights/1day with maybe a bus tour/visit to the Vatican thrown in. I'm looking for recommendations on accommodation or tours, preferably cheap/low budget as I can't afford a huge amount on this. Would also be flying from Scotland (Glasgow/Edinburgh).

Any suggestions welcome

2 nights 1 day isn't really long enough imo. the queue for St peters can get pretty long and you would probably only have time to do this and the museum and nothing else. try airbandb for cheap accommodation as you can rooms in peoples houses/flats.
