Hi - dh and I are off to Berlin with friends next month for a quick kid-free getaway!! Just wondering if anyone can recommend a nice (mid-range) hotel in a good location. There seems to be a lot of choice and I'm getting a bit mind-boggled! Thanks.

Yes, I went in February and stayed in a great family owned hotel.

But search for it through booking.com, I got it much cheaper that way. Nice rooms, just round the corner from kurfurstendamm (main shopping street), near underground station. Helpful staff and they speak English. Beware bin day on Tuesday (I think) though, they are very loud at about 5 or 6 am!!

Thanks. Sounds good - and we won't be there on a Tuesday! I've said I'll pull together a list of 3 for others to choose from so any more suggestions would be very welcome!

Also my parents went in March and stayed in an Ibis hotel, I think on or near Potsdammerplatz, I'll have a look.

Anyway, it was reasonably priced and very comfortable they said. Also quite central.

Just checked, there are lots of Ibis hotels in berlin so not sure which it was they stayed in but I imagine they are all similar, if you chose one of the central ones.

Can I be cheeky and ask where you booked your flights and how much

hotel Kastanienhof, I was there 2 weeks ago. Might be a bit pricey, but very nice. Good food. Good location, too.

When I flew, I flew Manchester to Berlin Schoenefeld with Easyjet, booked on their website, very cheap in January/February.

When I lady went swapped Tesco vouchers and stayed at the Berlin Hilton which was fab with a lovely pool and very central, just up from Checkpoint Charlie.

Thanks for the hotel recommendations. Good to have some options to explore.

We're flying gatwick to Berlin Sch also with EasyJet. We booked the flights in November and they were really cheap - around £120 return per couple.

Our hotel wasn't great so won't recommend it. But wanted to say its my favourite city and if I got a child-free weekend I'd be back in a flash. We were 'stuck' there for an extra few days when the Icelandic ash cloud struck. So much history and arts. And I loved the food - the most amazing breakfasts. Have fun!

Adina Apartments either Checkpoint Charlie (where we stayed) or is also another central one that looks good. Apartment style rooms of varying sizes. restaurant is 25% off with Berlin card. Lidl a stones throw away. Small pool. Was quiet.

Thanks Suttonmum - we've been thinking apartments might be fun so will definitely look into your suggestion. Thanks to others for suggestions too. I'm struggling to pin down which area we'd be best to be based in now but I'm sure I'll get there in the end.
