LEFKAS- walking/ hiking query

noonar · 22/07/2006 11:15

Thanks for all previous advice given about lefkas.
we're off next sunday and have read in 'rough guide' that its quite mountainous and good for walking. dh is quite keeen to explore the valleys-which could be relatively cool(!?)

Is it worth taking the back- carrier for dd 2- 2yo, and buying some decent walking sandals, or is this a ridiculous idea that is totally unrealistic with young children/ in the august heat? dd1 is 4, by the way.

ps does the mountainous terrain mean that the roads are terrifyingly narrow tracks with sheer drops to the side??? (had a bad experience once....)

It will be very hot - well, it should be. Would stick to active stuff either first thing or last thing - and would leave the kids in the kids' club, ideally. (Heat stroke isn't much fun!) That said, Simon will be able to advise as to what is and isn't do-able.

also

what do i need to take
beach towels
wot else

noonar · 26/07/2006 19:28

yeah, i was wondering about beach towels and bath towels.

also, had a bit of a panic about car hire. it's a long story but...dh lost his driving license in a fire at his office 3 weeks ago. dvla cant possibly send a replacement in time, but say they routinely fax car hire companies to say that hirers have a full license. anyway, simply travel said ' sorry , europcar don't accept faxes so you now have to hire another car with a company that will accept a fax, at your own expense.' and there was me expecting some customer care thrown in with my 3 grand holiday!
dh has called europcar direct, in lefkas and they have accepted a fax from the dlva without any problem at all. am upset by simply's response ...simply crap imo. let's hope there are no other hitches as i definately don't want to do the driving out there. what are the roads/ driving conditions/ greek drivers like, by the way?

hope this isnt a bad omen for our holiday!

noonar , dh got a duplicate licence within 2 days, ordered over the phone with DVLA. As long as your dh is replacing an existing photo licence (and the paper sheet) it needn't be a problem.

noonar · 26/07/2006 19:38

tahnks, lizs, but he only had a paper one - the same one he got when he passed his test in 1989! and they've repeatedly told him it'll take weeks!!!aagh!

mione was overnight almost

noonar · 27/07/2006 09:34

yeah, it seems to be quick if you are replacing a photo license but not if you've only ever had a paper one. aagh!

Noonar - are you back? Did you have a nice holiday?

noonar · 14/08/2006 13:07

hi willow, yes i'm back - good to hear from you had the best post-children holiday ever!! mousses lived up to and went beyond our expectations in every way. i never thought that i would actually relax with a 2 and a 4 yo in tow, but it was fab! the owners really took to dd2 and made us feel really welcome. i can't recommend it highly enough to anyone who's thinking of going. we'll defo be back- met some great people, and had a REAL holiday for once , rather than finding it harder than being at home. am now going to ring all my friends and bore them with all the details....

So glad to hear you liked it. Am yet to find someone who doesn't, but there's always a first time - glad it wasn't you!

willow2 · 14/08/2006 14:22

Oh, couple of q's - what's weather like and are the mossies bad at the moment?

noonar · 14/08/2006 15:13

weather was great overall, first week hot and sunny as predicted, second week almost a full day of storms/heavy rain, and a another rainy morning. fine and sunny overall tho. we liked the storms cos they were really dramatic. heat wasn't as oppressive as i was expecting, probably due to the fact that we left during the british heatwave so had got used to high temps. mossies not a significant problem, even for dh, who usually gets eaten alive. hope you have a fab time!
