In france you have to have a gated pool by law. Or one of those alarms. So I wouldn't worry about that too much

S of France around Avignon, Uzes, Gourdargues etc v nice.

Biarritz nice. beachy as well, not too touristy as on the atlantic coast, cheap flights in to bordeaux or biarritz. biggest sand dune in europe there, fab for climbing up..... and a big aqualand park thingy, great fun.
