Northern Portugal coast

Can anyone recommend a nice resort/town in the north of Portugal? Preferably on the coast. We have been to different parts of the Algarve in last few years and would like to try something different.

beaches in the north are beautiful but not ideal if you really want to swim in the sea ir have small children. Big and strong waves and slightly cold water
I grew up in a beach in the centre of the country and it's okay during the summer. I might be bias but I would recommend beaches south of Figueira da Foz.
Beaches south of Lisbon have a better sea and you can find really nice places. the further you go down the coast the warmer the sea is. The beaches in Alentejo are also really nice and less spoiled than the Algarve.

Thank you liquidambar swimming in the sea is one of my pleasures so I am going to have a look further south as you suggest.
