Is a photolicence necessary to drive/hire a car in Spain or is a paper licence sufficient

I think you have to have the whole licence, including paper part. I'm pretty sure dh had his whole licence when we hired in Majorca in May - they looked at it too if I recall.

photocard i think. i'm sure thats why my dad said he couldnt hire a car as he refuses to update his to a card.

Oh no DH is going to be unhappy if he has to do all the driving. I wonder how long it takes for the photocard to come through if I get the documents checked at the post office.

I have regularly hired cars on mainland Spain. Up until a year ago I had an old paper licence and thats was not a problem ever. I now have a card licence and I've never taken the bit of paper that comes with it and have never been asked for it.

I rang the hire car company and a paper licence is fine for Spain.

I have an old green licence with no photo and carjet.com let me hire one last summer, no problem.
