Bulgaria??? Where to go??? Where to buy???
oasis · 13/07/2006 08:16
We are really keen to go to Bulgaria with a veiw to purchase a small holiday home with some inheritance money that has come through, but we have no idea where to start. Anyone had any experience of buying a home in Bulgaria or know the country quite well? We were looking for something near the Black sea coast, so from what I can gather that is Varna or Bourgas. Any advice appreciated.

Oasis, I know you got the info I sent you but I feel morally bound to point out that, I personally would not invest in Bulgaria as I feel the market there is well on the way to being flooded.
Basically there is far more properties being built than there is a demand for. Yes it is cheap, and you may make a profit but I would be very careful where you put your money!

Know nothing about Bulgaria but there was an article in the Sunday Times last week (Home section) detailing the stories of several people who had gotten their fingers burnt in Bulgaria by doing exactly what you are hoping to do.

Ah gawd - my husband is going on and on about buying a property in Bulgaria - I need to try and put him off - if only we knew where the next hotspot was going to be .... I heard on the telly the other day that Bulgarians(?) shake their heads to indicate YES and nod their heads to indicate NO - now that should be enough to put anyone off - how confusing!
Carmenere · 26/07/2006 11:37
Littlemoose - tell him that the next property hotspot is South America. The market in Brazil particularly is about to explode. Not so convenient for a holiday home but for a return on your investment it should really deliver.

I like the Bulgarians I've met. Imagine it's a nice place. I'd be tempted to go there on holiday twice first, rent a car and drive around, looking at places. Was sent a brochure on Bulgaria once, didn't like the look of those standard beach holiday places, big ugly concrete blocks of hotels and so on, but further south along the coast looks quite nice. Hard to say how it will look in 8 years time, more concrete blocks maybe. The mountain areas look very pretty in Bulgaria too.
Croatia is very popular at the moment, I read but probably more expensive. No idea of the cost of properties in Bulgaria.

Unless you have money to gamble with, ie money that you can afford to lose, or at least not make a huge profit from, I would steer clear of Bulgaria investment wise. A lot of people have made quite a bit on Bulgarian property recently and it is possible to still make a profit but not anything like the previous amounts. It will take much longer to make the same amount iyswim.
LittleMoose · 26/07/2006 11:59
Yes I agree I think we have missed the boat on Bulgaria. South America sounds good but it's so blinkin far away! I have always heard horror stories about Brazil and thought it wasn't particulary safe there - will look into it - thanks for advice

Just an update: I did see the Sunday Times on Bulgaria and opted to go for a veiwing trip to Turkey instead this weekend. I bought a lovely place off plan. Am delighted with the purchase and I am happy that it is a good mid to long term investment and somewhere that we can use as a holidy home. Thanks for the advice Carmenere.

Whereabouts in Turkey, Oasis? Glad you found a nice place you're happy with. That was quick work
oasis · 27/07/2006 15:33
Thanks again Camenere. We bought a duplex in a fishing village in Akbuk, just outside Altinkum. I had done my homework on the web and via MN and I had a good idea of what we wanted so when I saw it I knew that this was it. Went with a property finding company so was really nervous of hard sell and being held captive till I bought, but they were as good as gold and our rep a really nice guy. So all in all a really positive experience.

My friend has just come back from a holiday in her mother's newish apartment in Turkey (can't remember where - north of Bodrum?) and it sounds great - hope you will be as happy in yours.
oasis · 27/07/2006 18:42
Thanks KTeePee, am really looking forward to getting back out there and seeing the place finished.
quootiepie · 27/07/2006 19:12
hiya... Have a place in Sunny Beach, on the coast. BULGARIANDREAMS is a great company, thats who we bought through. CHeck their website www.bulgariandreams.com .
moondog · 27/07/2006 19:15
Hmmmmmm don't buy anything abroad is my advice.
It doesn't do any of the locals any favours whatsoever.
Better to holiday there and spend money locally.
A far more moral decision.
Oasais,as someone who lives in Turkey,I would definitely not go for a holiday home there.
The PKK and Islamic extremists are targetting people like you.Be warned......
