Just arrived yesterday in LA and our DD fell asleep in the car on the way to the hotel at 5ish pm then woke up at 11pm for the start of her day!!!aaargh! 11pm is 7am UK time so this is why but I'd hope she would have slept longer. We got 3 hours sleep. So it's now 9am and she's been up all night. Doubt she can manage to stay awake till night time but even is she can what if she wakes at 11pm again?
Really worried we're going to be too tired to do anything in the day and then cooped up in the bedroom all night awake...
Any tips? Or reassurance she might just adjust?

She will adjust. Smile

I managed it with DCs throughout their childhoods - and found that the key was being really tough on not letting them sleep. You do feel like a mean mummy when they are falling asleep in their lunch plates, but really there isn;t a choice unless you want to be nocturnal while you are there.

I didn't let mine sleep on arrival until as late as I could possibly push them - and they would then wake at about 3.30 - 4am. However, I was also bright eyed and wide awake then, so that was fine.
No naps during the day, after 1pm ....however mean that makes you ....just do fun things, and brace for them getting cranky by mid afternoon!!
Bedtime on the second night would be earlier than at home, but not by more than an hour ...and usually they would sleep through until 4.30 - 5am
By Day 3 we would be on a normal schedule.

Have fun!

Thanks reprint. Managed just to let her have a 2 hour nap at 10am and then she lasted till 7pm and up at 3am so better. Hope for more improvement tonight. Really hard to stop her falling asleep when we're travelling by car..
