Passport photos: cut to separate or leave attached?

Am about to apply for a passport and I know the photo requirements are so strict these days it's easy to get something wrong. The woman at the shop where I had the photos done said don't cut between the two photos to separate them or they will be rejected. However, I can't see anything to that effect in the passport application instructions and don't want the application rejected because I've left them attached! Can anyone who has applied for a (British) passport recently advise?

You can separate them but don't trim the white around the edges off. I sent mine in like this and they were fine.

You can pay at some POs to check your application/photos.

I have never sent attached ones - applied for last 2 a few months ago.

I sent two separate photos. The shop clipped them to size.

just received the passport back, so it must have been okay.
