Suggestions for day out withoot the kids oop North

Okay, here is the deal. Mine and dh's birthday yesterday, very boringly on same day. Pressie from my mum and sister is to look after our 3 bairns from 9am till after bedtime on Saturday. We live nr Newcastle. Where can we go in a day? I know the contenders - Leeds, Edinburgh, but what do you wise lot recommend? I fancy a nice lunch, bit of window shopping, maybe a gallery or summat, and then lots of wine.........

Big treat for us. Any ideas welcome and muchos grassyarse in advance.

I think from Newcastle, Edinburgh on the train would be lovely.

Or York on the train as suggested by Fio. Both fast direct trains.

York is a nice distance innit? Just sort of an hour or so on the train. Am just a bit out of touch with what is there now.

If it were me (and oh how I wish it was!) I would go somewhere nearby so that you didn't have to waste too much of the day travelling. Then I would go shopping, to the cinema, have an extravagant meal out and then sit in a cocktail bar.

Awww, thanks girls. Probably York then. Was sort of swayed by Leeds as haven't been since transformed into mega shopping haven, but not much dosh anyhoo and dh would winge his arse off. Nice problem to have eh??
