Multi generation trip to Amsterdam - tips?

We're planning a surprise long weekend break to celebrate my mother's 60th. It'll be my parents, me, dh plus our two dc (4 and 1) , my three adult siblings, sil and cousin.

In January.

Any tips for what to do or see there? Good areas to stay? We're thinking of renting a big apartment.

The Amsterdam history museum is pretty cool.

If you'll have any childfree time....there's a coffeehouse called the 420 cafe which is brilliant. Great atmosphere, fab coffee, the staff are cool.
