Why is it so hard to find travel to Finland??

We've decided to go to Lapland in October 2014, I've found some great deals on log cabins (which we want to do as opposed to a hotel/apartment), but I can't find any easy ways of getting there!
I can't find any flights to Lapland, and the few I've found to other parts of Finland mean several plane changes. There don't appear to be ferries direct to anywhere in Finland either. We'll be travelling with a 6 and 2 year old, so obviously want to take the easiest, most direct route possible. I don't mind it taking a day or so, but minimal changes are a must. Can anyone who's travelled there before point me in the right direction please?? TIA Smile

Which airport are you going from in the uk?

Longdistance · 25/08/2013 15:35

I think you can take a train from Sweden to Lapland?
Not sure about flights.

To be honest Numberlock we'll go from anywhere! I've been searching Bristol and London airports, and looked at all ferryports in England.

Ooh thanks Longdistance , I'll have a look at that.
I've just found out that there's a night train from Helsinki, but even getting there is awkward, it seems easiest route is via Amsterdam, but it's about 18 hours minimum connection time Confused

I know it would probably be easier to use a travel agent, but I find them to restrictive.

Where (roughly) in the uk are you?

Longdistance · 25/08/2013 16:14

What about flights from Norway, or Sweden to Lapland? So a connecting flight to wherever in Lapland you want to go to...

Numberlock · 25/08/2013 16:25

I don't know where you are but Finnair go from Manchester via Helsinki.

Could it just be it's to early to book flights to Kittila. Normally they are released about 11 months before travel date?

ElephantsEye · 25/08/2013 19:47

Fluffy may have a point. I use skyscanner to check for flights, and they are not quoting for flights that far ahead.

For comparison, in Oct 2013 you can fly Heathrow to Kittila for under £250 (1 adult). It looks like you'd have an overnight stay in Helsinki.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 25/08/2013 23:41

I'm in South Wales, but prepared to travel so Manchester could be an option.

Good point about flight dates, a few sites I looked at only went up to August 2014 so I was looking at Oct 2013 for prices. I suppose it's possible that more routes will become available closer to the time.

Thanks for your help everyone, I guess I'll have to contain my excitement a bit longer before planning! Grin
