Flybe...

DS has a return flight booked with Flybe next month...change of plans means that he needs to fly a day earlier than planned but return flight is same. With charges etc its actually working out cheaper to fly over with another carrier. If he books this one and doesn't turn up for the Flybe flight, will he still be able to get the return flight home?

Quite possibility not - he will be classed as breaching his contract, and so his return flight may well be cancellated.
Ring Flybe, and talk to them - you may be able to cancel the outbound flight?

Was it booked as a 'return'? I would doubt it, with ryanair you book two single journeys and i would have thought it would be the same with flybe. There is usually no discount on either flight for booking the return, implying it is not, actually, a return.

Also, what about people who miss their outbound flight, surely they're still allowed to return, once they finally get there!?!
