We're going to be at the South Bank for a matinee tomorrow, has anyone got any suggestions for something to do in the morning? I was thinking of Borough Market, but don't want to go if it's going to be jammed.

Where's that? I've heard of it, but don't even know what is sold there

Borough market is great, but will probably be packed. A walk along the south bank is good with lots to look at HMS Belfast is not far from borough market and along the river, as is the Golden Hind and southwark cathedral. Or at the other end is the Tate modern with the wobbly bridge, which is always worth a look and free so you don't need to worry about doing the whole gallery. At the top is a great interactive area for kids.

there's tons of stuff along the south bank so you can easily just stay in the area. great playground by the London eye, fountains by the royal festival hall, then sand pits a bit further along. watch the skateboarders for a bit then go down to tate modern which is great for kids. borough will be busy unless you go first thing - or you can go further down to Maltby Street market which is sort of the new borough and a bit off the beaten track.

Not sure but check the tubes lines as a few of the main ones or Picadilly will be closed

Describe those in your party.

Thanks everybody, there's really useful stuff in there. It's just me and my dh - I should have specified that at the start.

Yes, lots of people are answering without thinking as if you have little kids in tow!

Borough Market will be busy (always is) but quieter than usual as so many Londoners are away on hols, so I would make the effort and go there. Buy something takeaway for lunch and eat on the grass in front of Tate Modern or in Southwark Cathedral grounds if there is room.

Cable car across the river then the boat to Waterloo?
