I was looking at the groupon holiday offers as well - they seem to be good value. Are they trustworthy?

Ponders · 04/08/2013 12:29

I haven't done any travel ones, but have done travelzoo who have similar offers (though they work differently - they just publicise offers from travel agents etc & you pay the agent, not travelzoo)

Not sure if that helps or not! But as it's PGL, & I think it'll be an e-voucher, this one should be ok.

haven't heard of travelzoo - will have a little look now Smile
looking for a nice girly weekend.

Groupon is great as long as you can be sure the company won't go out of business and you won't forget to spend the voucher. With PGL I think you'll be okay. They make their money by people buying the voucher and never spending it (Have done this 3 times Blush - not to the value of £200 though!)

travelzoo have some brilliant offers, cornypepper - esp meals out, spa days, activities etc - for those you do pay travelzoo upfront. We've had several dinners & a powerboat trip around Liverpool docks Grin

they send out a weekly email when you register, & also one-off emails about offers local to you

YoniBotts, we lost a bit on the Liverpool boat trip - bought vouchers for 2x 2 people, but the weather was so awful last summer we kept putting it off & only used 1 in the end. (Lost £25 which I assume went to travelzoo, not the boat place?)

I used Groupon a lot last year. Went on days away, weekends away, bought stuff.

Then I saw a deal for a weekend to a NAMED hotel in Valencia, with flights from gatwick. I was phoned by the travel agency it went through, (KPX Travel) and told that the named hotel was 'not available' (5 months in advance? For late February?Hmm) but i could have another for the same price, or the Expohotel without breakfast, and dearer. Went for the same price one.

Onto flights. We were to travel on 'Vizza' (strong asian accent) which i subsequently found out was Wizz Air. These flights went out late on the saturday and early back on the monday - ie, we'd have got 1 full day there for the price of 3!

OR - we could fly Easyjet, which went early sat and late back monday - for an extra £63 per person. By this stage I thought we were too far into it to back out, so bought the Easyjet.

I work at Gatwick, and subsequently found out that Wizz Air DO NOT FLY FROM GATWICK, NOR DID THEY GO TO VALENCIA!. (At tlhat stage they were exclusively eastern european)

I contacted groupon several times with my complaint that I have been co-erced into buying a deal which did not exist ;- the hotel was obviously not part of it, and the flights did not exist, thus forcing me to buy a more expensive one.

They continue to completely ignore the complaint though they did remove the 'offer'...

I have unsubscribed.

I now use Wowcher, travelzoo, sawdays, and secret escapes - and check v v thoroughly any offer I take up (tripadvisor etc)

And I never buy any offer 'with flights' as i like to did my own organising - that way any changes come straight through me, not the travel agency, and I like to know who i am flying.,

Ponders · 04/08/2013 13:30

we did a travelzoo offer to Marrakech earlier this year with Fleetway travel.

the package was good & the flights were with easyjet but 2 things annoyed me:

  1. because the agent did the flight booking & had the booking ref, I couldn't reserve seats myself, & the agent charged £42 for a 5-minute call to book one extra legroom & one ordinary seat each way. Booking direct would have been £22 Hmm (I know it's only £20 but it's the principle, dammit Grin)

  2. again because we didn't have the booking ref we couldn't check-in online & queued for ages (before it dawned on me that agent had mentioned we would have speedy boarding along with the extra legroom seat. duh!)

so I completely agree with you about the flights thing, captainmummy!
