One night in Reykjavik.

We have one night in Reykjavik before heading off around the rest of Iceland. We will have a young teen with us (and we aren't really night life people) the rest of our holiday is going to be trekking and outdoors type stuff. So do you have any recommendations of how to make the most of our time in having something to eat and seeing a bit of the city.
Thanks!

Just returned! Take the bus tour around the city, eat out at an authentic Icelandic restaurant - there is one across from the modernist church in the top of the town.

Did you have to book a table or could you just rock up?

walk round the city ?

bus to the perlan for views and ice cream. spendy to eat there but You don't have to.
there is a saga museum there too, a bit like jorvik but gives an idea of where everything comes from in the island in terms of actual history and folkhistory.

Reykjavik museum is really good if you have time( or bad weather! )

we ate whale in the little fishing hut type cafe on the harbour ... I'd recommend it ( we had one portion whale meat to share and fish soup! )

Is that the hut that is supposed to do the best lobster soup in the world?
Am very much looking forward to eating lobster. Uncertain about the ethics of whale. Museum sounds like a good back up for poor weather. I think a walking tour sounds good.
Is the cathedral nice?

The town is easily walkable. The harbour has an array of nice restaurants. Not sure if the cathedral is open in the evenings. If no bus tour get a taxi to give you a drive around if you want to see more of the bay and outskirts of Reykjavik.

Bad kitten yes it is! It was an experience. Take a portion of fod from the chiller to the counter pay and they cook it whilst you sit in old plastic tubs!

Minke whale is not endangered and very much part of tradition and culture for icelanders. We didn't manage to try puffin though - strangely that didn't sound at all nice to me ( whale was actually really tasty -like the very finest tender steak- very rare)

The cathedral is lovely ( we are umm.... Cathedral lovers!). Akureyri church was amazing too it has a window from Coventry cathedral!

Enjoy your trip. It was the best holiday ever I think.

I'm really excited! Must remember to go into the church at Akureyri.
