We stayed near Saumur last year and stayed overnight at the Novotel Rouen Sud. Family rooms, pool, good kids menu ie vegetables, kids get free breakfast. Was fine and I have booked it for out and back trips to the Charente this year.

Thanks Portofino...we're actually staying at the Novotel in Rouen on the way down! Good to know it's a good one! May just book it for the way back then....thanks!

We have stayed a few times at www.lagaucherie.com in the Loire. Great interconnecting rooms, fab food and a lovely pool to cool off after a long car journey. The owner's speak excellent English. Felt like part of our holiday rather than just an overnight stop over.
