Las Vegas with 3 and 1 year old

We are planning to spend 4 days in Las Vegas at the end of the month. We are thinking of staying at the Palazzo. Our DCs are 3 1/2 and 20 months. Are we mad?

Yes it's an awful place which is good enough i reason in my opinion but not really a place for kids

Not as long as you're happy to use baby listening services... In my experience those are good as the hotel casinos will do anything to keep you downstairs gambling!

I would look at other perhaps more family friendly hotels like Vdara, Platinum or the Signature at MGM Grand (all of these are both non smoking and non gaming).

The standard room is not a suite in the usual sense but one split level room.

Also if you are going there at the end of the month its going to be very hot indeed.

Seems odd to take such little children to a place that seems 100% geared towards adults. What will you do in the evenings?

I liked Vegas but you will be bored with small children there really isn't anything to do for preschoolers and it will be too hot to sit by the pool all day.

We had 2 days there (pre children) and that was plenty.

Thanks for your replies. We thought that it might be quite a fun place for the kids: fountains, fake Venetian canals etc and are trying to gauge just how "adult" it is. Are all the pools blaring out house music all day l

Are the pools blaring out house music all day long and people dancing and partying or is that a generalisation and there are plenty of places which are more sedate? Does it feel like a place where children are actively discouraged? We have no plans to gamble, we just thought it might be a slightly crazy fun place for us all to experience but I am aware that it may be totally inappropriate and we should just head straight to California.

Some of the hotels pools are geared more towards the "pretty young things" in their 20s. Mandalay Bay is one such resort and Wet Republic at the MGM Grand is another but that facility is completely separate from the MGM Grand's main pool itself.

I've seen plenty of children in Las V but it has become less family oriented (and more geared perhaps towards the pretty young things) over the last decade or so. Children are not discouraged (one day these youngsters will be adults themselves, the casino owners are not stupid) but some resorts are definitely more family oriented (like the ones I noted) than others.

Would say that the Pirate show Sirens of Ti at Treasure Island is not really for very young children due to the show's content. Also strollers are not allowed in the viewing areas.

You are quite sane and will have a fab time. We stayed, pre DC, at the Venetian, and saw plenty of families with kids there. Vegas is fab, just embrace and cheesiness - we found the locals super friendly. Amazing part of the country for a road trip. We are planning to take DC when older, to recreate our honeymoon road trip (and to revisit where we got married Wink!)

I would be more concerned about the heat- knocking 40 degrees and v little shade anywhere- we were there in summer with teens and it was close on unbearable. It is noisy and smoky (still allowed in casinos which you will have to walk through to get out if the hotel) and these places are vast- dont underestimate distances between hotels and attractions. There is v little for really little ones to enjoy IMO and frankly they won't remember it later. Go to California and a nice beach where it will be cooler and they can have fun

better hope the heatwave has eased by then...

I don't gamble. Vegas was interesting for an afternoon and a night. So many natural wonders about that it seems a shame to go all that way and then stay indoors.

high sleaze level too - I think prostitution is actually illegal in Vegas but there are plenty of ways round that and the advertising is everywhere. Not that your baby will care!

I spent 4 weeks in on The Strip at the Flamingo Hotel/MGM/Bellagio with a 1 year old and a 3 year old when I was working. It was HELL! the hotel was okay but definitely not geared to kids, you walk through gambling to get to anything, there are slot machines everywhere even in the bathrooms! The pools were okay but again lots of couples/young groups who were not impressed having kids running about and playing in the pool.

I would honestly take the few extra days in California.

You'll have a great time never done it with dcs myself but have seen plenty there. Although everything really seems to be aimed for adults only. There is a water park just off the strip (luxor side)

Definitely not tacky its an amazing place.

It will be roasting though already it the 40s during the day just now.

I am very Envy we have 339 days until were back there

We took DS a couple of times when he was 3 because we were living in LA at the time, and he loved it - especially the Pirates show at Treasure Island as the risque content when straight over his head!

You can make it work with small children with a bit of planning and if you're happy to base what you see around them - off the top of my head I remember taking him to see the lions at MGM, the flamingos at the Flamingo, the Rainforest Cafe, watching the Bellagio fountains from the strip and the outside of New York New York which has miniature models of American landmarks. I don't know if it still has the rollercoaster, although I seem to remember it turned out to be a bit extreme for young kids. There was also a really good science museum just outside Las Vegas which DS enjoyed and a go karting and kids amusement place nearby!

We stayed at the Luxor and the Mirage and preferred the Mirage for it's central strip location and just a bit of a smarter feel. The pool was great but it was full of spring breakers smoking in the water which I was a bit taken aback by!! The all you can eat hotel buffets are also great for kids and I think they were free for under 4s.

Downsides for me with kids would be the heat at this time of year and the way you can't stop on the gaming floor with them but at some hotels that's your only route to get anywhere, so every time you out you have to contend with a toddler who just wants to examine a fruit machine.....I think the Mirage wasn't too bad in this respect. Hope that helps a bit!

Oh God this is my idea of hell! I've been to LV twice and cannot, for the life of me, imagine why anyone would want to take two tiny DC all that way for four nights in the most adult place imaginable. LV is all about gambling, shopping, eating out, drinking in bars, going to shows ... literally nothing about it is child-friendly. Plus, it's very, very hot in July and your LOs will be jet-lagged like nobody's business. Yes, you're mad!!
