How many cases to take away?

holidayseeker · 27/06/2013 20:50

We are going away for 12 nights and we are booking the flights and hotel separately.

I have booked to take 2 cases at 20 kg each but will this be enough for me, dh, 2 dd's aged 6 and 7.

Should I change it to 3 cases as in the past we have had 2 cases for 7 nights and they were quite full. Or should I buy both dd's a hand luggage bag to fill with clothes?

TIA

It depends on how much you need/want?

I always like to travel light. We usually travel as me, dh and ds (15). Last time we took 2 medium cases - about 20kg. It was enough. We were self catering however, and so could wash clothes. But we didn't really need to.

But yes to taking some in hand luggage. It's a good idea anyway- just in case of missing luggage.

Recently I took DS to Spain for 5 nights, in a hotel, and we managed with hand luggage only.

Great thanks for reply, dh tells me I always take too much, which I do as I often don't wear all the clothes I take but just worried I'm going to come to pack and not have enough.

I reckon that's about what we took when our DC were that age, and we never hit the 20kg max!

great, thanks for putting my mind at rest, and saving on the extra baggage charges Smile

Where are you going? If its a beach holiday you won't need much and can probably wash some things to reuse.
Put one emergency outfit in everyone's carry on luggage ( shorts, tshirt, undies, flip flops)
2 cases will probably be all you can manage to lug about the airport.

yes its a beach holiday, we are off to lanzarote Smile

I agree with each person having a change of clothes in their hand luggage. Handy in case someone is sick/spills a drink/case goes missing.
Also pack some of everyones clothes including a swimsuit in each of the checked in bags, again in case of mislaid baggage. Tube of travel wash takes up far less space and weight than lots of extra clothes.

The DD's will also need their hand luggage for toys/games/magazines for the journey.

I think you'll be fine with 2 x 20kg cases for all of you.

20kg is enough for six months and is HEAVY. Your kids should be past the worst of the vomit and spill stage, and even if they do one pack of travel wash and a rinse through will do it.

for you, take one pair of evening shoes, a pair of trainers and a pair of flip flops. Two skirts, swimwear, a few t-shirts, couple of pairs of shorts, one pair long trousers, a couple of light fleeces. Similar for the kids, just a bit more in case of mess.

mix the clothes between the cases in the event that one goes astray, and the basics in hand luggage is quite a good idea. Soft bags are also good, why waste effort lifting heavy cases?

We always take 3 cases for 2 weeks. I just can't do packing light however much I try - lol

jamtoast12 · 29/06/2013 07:31

We take 2 cases for a family of four and always bring one home unworn!

dementedma · 29/06/2013 17:51

Taking two cases here for four of us - should be plenty.lay out what you want to take then half it.

Suttonmum1 · 29/06/2013 22:39

Use one or both of the kids hand allowances for small roll on cases and give them each a small bag that goes inside your hand luggage?

holidayseeker · 29/06/2013 23:05

Thanks for all the tips and Suttonmum good idea I can then use kids hand baggage if needed and just fill one bag with plane things for kids.

Two cases Will be plenty. We usually just take 4 x hand luggage to save on cost and waiting around for baggage reclaim. You can take 10kg each which IMO is more than enough but then maybe you take nicer clothes away with you than we do!
