Having spent hours trawling review sites I'm just not getting anywhere with this. Has anyone booked with any of the cheaper online companies (who subcontract to centauro etc) and NOT had loads of problems?

I'm thinking economycarhire in particular.

Haven't used them yet but have booked ours through a company called Javea Autos (I think). Hoping it'll mean we avoid the massive queues from the big companies.

Try Victoria cars

I can't remember who we used but just to warn you to be very vigilant in the car park - I had my handbag stolen off the trolley in the hire car car park - never even noticed anyone near us - I was so preoccupied with 2 children

When I reported it the police etc there were loads of other reporting stolen items and I was advised it happens all the time and often the thieves dress up in uniforms to look official!!

I'm not trying to scare you I've been back since and was fine but just to warn you to be careful as it was not a nice start to the holiday.

Just got back from Alicante and we used EDI car rental. They were brilliant. No trying to sell us all the extras, didnt have to buy a full tank of petrol, didn't charge extra for car seats etc. I spent weeks trawling the net trying to find a good deal! Another good one I found was PJ's car rental but they didn't have anything available for us. Good luck and enjoy your holiday!

Keep em coming, edi look good, anyone else used them? I'm a bit nervous about booking with a small company. Don't know why.

I was too titty but I read so many bad reviews on the big companies and only found good things about EDI/PJ's. I honestly couldn't fault them, they were there to meet us and we were in the car and out of the airport in 5 mins. They also don't put a 'holding' deposit on your card like other companies do.

EggInABap · 12/06/2013 15:53

I think I found reviews for EDI on trip advisor.

I got a very good deal last year by booking with holiday autos via a link from my bank website! The actual booking was with Hertz and we saved a fortune on the rate we would have paid booking directly with them.

A big tip to save money is only take out the basic insurance cover with the car hire company and buy the top up cover from a specialist company for a fraction of the cost - I use insurance4carhire.com

Hetz were very good and the queue was tiny compared to some of the others!

www.hirecarsinspain.com
have always provided a good service to us.

We also book through
www.doyouspain.com
if we need to pickup or drop off at a different airport not covered by above.

Our cheapest rentals at Alicante recently have been supplied by firefly - they are in the carpark not the terminal.

EggInABap · 13/06/2013 17:30

I'd advise reading the reviews on doyouspain before booking through them. Not good!

We just came back from Alicante and used Goldcar. They have been in the past very good however I think their popularity has resulted in very long queues. We paid extra for Priority check in but still had to wait 40 minutes. And we would have got through as quickly without priority (they have a ridiculous system that if you haven't pre-booked you go in the priority line which holds everything up). What was interesting was that if it's speed you are after there was no queue at any other car rental co desk - Avis, Hertz etc were all completely empty (I noticed that both on the way out and the way back in). Goldcar and Record were the only ones with queues. Also when I talked to the girl at the goldcar desk she said the q was very short so it wasn't a one off! goldcar do guarantee a car seat but won't fit it and the instructions were terrible - I would definitely take my own next time. The car itself was fine.
