Norway - what to expect?

I'm off to Norway this July, I've never been before and have no idea what the weather will be like, what clothes to take, how much money to take (I've been told it's expensive) and anything else to look out for.
It's an escorted tour, starting in Oslo, then going up into the mountains/glaciers and villages and ending up at the Wes coast visiting the fjords. Basically the whole of the South but not travelling far up North. We'll be staying in hotels.
I've also been told the mosquitos are dreadful in the summer, is this true?

Pack for every weather eventuality - many layers. I assume you'll be not doing some serious yomping over mountains. If you are then also pack for the possibility of snow - at the glacial point it can be cold even on a sunny day. Swimming costumes for dipping in the fjords. They can be cold even on a summer's day. Sturdy walking shoes. I found that because of their active outdoor lifestyle that walks that I understood to be a little meander weren't the same as a walk in the park at the UK

It is expensive. I felt double London prices. Some things are much more expensive .... booze and fresh fruit and veg.

It is beautiful. The people are friendly. There is much to do that puts you in touch with nature ... so no need to spend £££££s on activities. When I last went about 8 years ago it felt, in some parts of the country, that I was visiting the 1970s.

I love Norge. Really love it. Next time I go I want to go North. Enjoy.

That's really, really helpful! I'm SO excited! I've been told Norway is so beautiful. I've been to Iceland before which was stunning; I loved the cleanliness, the wide open spaces, the mountains and glaciers. In fact, when I got to walk on my first glacier I thought it was magical!

Everyone I've spoken to says that Norway has all of these elements but even more...prettier, more mountains, more valleys and, of course, the fjords. The tour is taking us up onto the glaciers, I've decided after my last expereince that every holiday I book from now onwards has to have a glacier in it!!

I'll certainly take proper walking shoes, thanks for the advice.

I'm of to Norway this Sunday on a cruise and have found this thread very helpful. Clothes wise I'm taking a bit of everything.

Norway is wonderful but it is eyewateringly expensive. Two sandwiches and two drinks came to about 600kr. We went in late May; it was light jacket weather in the towns and coat weather by the glacier. Spotlessly clean everywhere we went, very pleasant people whose English put some native speakers to shame.

In that case I'll be prepared for the expensive...although it was similar in Iceland, especially fresh food which all had to be flown in - a pint of milk type carton worked out to about £6 !!
I'm going to take a whole selection of clothes and layer up.
I presume I can drink the water...I don't have to take bottled water like for some hotter countries?
And I checked online about customs; it looks as though I can take my coffee/sugar and UHT milk for my cuppa in my suitcase.
Does anyone know whether hotels are normally equipped with a kettle and tea-making facilities or should I bring my travel kettle instead?

Take a travel kettle - it's a uniquely British thing!

Agree with those saying it's expensive, but so beautiful and everyone is friendly and kind. Also do NOT buy or taste cloudberry jam. Under any circumstances.

The main thing that is really expensive is Alcohol - get all the duty free you are allowed and able to carry - if you are the type to like a few drinks in the evening. Once that runs out - be prepared to just have one glass of wine a night!!!

Hi! I've never been to Norway - this thread is making me want to go!
I was in Finland this time last year & the mosquitoes in forested areas were awful! Huge & everywhere! I ended visiting A & E as I took an allergic reaction to the bites!
