Monte Carlo - Advice/Recommendations/Alternatives?

We are looking at going away for a couple of nights for DH's 40th birthday. It will be our first child free break for 6 years Smile We've done various city breaks before and don't want to spend time doing lots of sightseeing etc., however at the same time, we don't want to be somewhere rural. We'd like somewhere with good food, nice scenery, good people watching opportunities and hopefully some sun for pool lounging.

DH quite fancies the south of France and mentioned Monte Carlo. Is it hideously poncey and naff? Would it be better to stay elsewhere and just go to Monaco for a nose around? Any hotel recommendations?

Another possibility would be the Amalfi Coast - Positano or Ravello. Again, any thoughts or recommendations would be gratefully received.

I would stay in Nice and use the bus/train to explore. This is a lovely hotel overlooking the sea, and right by the old town. It would be easy to do a day trip to Monte Carlo, and you will get more bang for buck staying elsewhere.

I would stay in Nice. Stayed at Hotel Suisse for 10th Wedding Anniversary last Sept, it was lovely. The view from room spectacular.

Bus service excellent to Monaco for 1 Euro!!!
