Torquay for a weekend break?

Anyone know what Torquay is like? Looking for somewhere to go with good shopping, nice restaurants, coast a bonus , bit of nightlife within 3 hours or so of Southampton. Done Bournemouth & Brighton, can't leave the country as only 2 nights so not long enough to faff with airports/Eurostar ...

I'd recommend Torquay. Not really into night life myself but it has no shortage of bars

It's more your old people's seaside holiday than trendy night life imo

I found Torquay a bit seedy to be honest. Not great shops, although maybe on a par with other seaside resorts (not including Brighton). I was a bit bored on a day trip. No idea of nightlife though as I was with the kids and only went for the day.
