Morrocco- has anyone booked flights, hotel and local sight seeing separately?

We would like to go to Morocco for October half term, but would like to know if we can book flights, stay and local sight seeing( going to bedouin tent in the desert etc., ) separately?
How safe and easy is it?
I looked at exodus holidays and it comes up to 3200 for four of us and we can't afford it. I would like the children to have some relaxed time - by the pool, bit of history and culture for me/us. I quite like the idea of staying in the desert and having camel ride, souks etc., I have two children - 5 and 12 year old.

I am open to other suggestions? I have been looking into Crete and Rhodes but cant make up my mind.

We did it, for much, much less than that. DD1 was 7 at the time and DD2 not on the scene.
We flew Easyjet to Marrakech, and booked ourselves a riad (traditional moroccan guest house in the medina) for the first few nights. We then decided exactly what to do when we got there, but you could book some of it in advance.
We went on a coach to Essaouira, which was cheap as chips- we actually booked our Essaouira riad from Marrakech on the laptop (free wifi in most riads), but you could just as easily book it further in advance or even not book till you arrive.
We then travelled by coach again to Agadir and spent a few nights in an all inclusive on the beach. Agadir was my least favourite of all the places I think, was much more commercialised. Food best in Essaouira- gorgeous seafood.
It was fairly cheap to eat out and coaches were cheap, comfortable and easy to book- I think you'd find it easy to organise yourself.

We have also been to Rhodes with DD1- last year, when I was pregnant and DD was 9.
Both were lovely- Rhodes slightly more 'beachy' apart from a couple of days looking round the historical stuff- Morocco has lots more to see and do really.
Let me know if there's anything i haven't answered and ill try to remember.

Thanks, my initial thought was exactly that it will be much cheaper if we organise it ourselves.
Did you go to the Atlas Mountains and to the desert, the sunrise in the desert is apparently not to be missed?

We didn't actually, we did it all in ten days so we only had a few days in each place. But it would be very easy to book those excursions while in Morocco. The Riad owners were very helpful and useful sources of knowledge.

Yes we did the same, we flew with easyjet and got a very naice riad in marrakesh from ownersdirect and that came with a housekeeper and a Butler/ fixer who met us at the airport and could arrange everything with no hassle.

The riad wasnt cheap but was way cheaper than you have been quoted, think it was 150 or so a night out of season. It was 3 bed, 3 bath, very ornate with our own plunge pool on the roof. The housekeeper came in each day to clean and cook if we wanted and to light all the night candles around the waterfall!

Youbrokemyshoulder- Is it possible to have a link to the place you went?

goingtobefree - This company specialise in Morocco and can organise all the trips such as to the Atlas mountains and even have their own desert camp.
Haven't used them myself, but know someone who has and were impressed.
