Mileage vs. Age. Anyone know anything about buying cars?

I have been offered a part exchange on my car. The one I've been offered is 2 years younger than my current, but has about 20k more miles on it than mine. Is age or mileage more important?

Depends on the type of mileage. Lots of motorway mileage can be better than less town mileage.

Aha. I'm buying through a mechanic, so I don't suppose he'd be able to tell me the type of mileage.

How many miles do yuou do a year?

If less than 10 - 12,000 then I would go with it

cos the miles will be evened out

Ave mileage is 10 - 12,000 per year

Check it wasn't a taxi or hire car though

Speak to old driver

Do you trust this bloke?

Get an RAC/AA vehicle exam done

It will only cost about £100 and it will save you buying one that has been in accident

We were about to buy a car from a dealer and were lied to about various things

Had an RAC check who pointed out it had just been in big accident and engine had been pushed out of correct place

So deffo worth the money having a full check and they drive the car as well

so please have it checked

Also depends on whether it is petrol or diesel. Apparently high mileage on a diesel is better than high mileage on a petrol. Don't personally know why, but a number of people have said this.
