majorca quiet location -

Hi we are going to Majorca for nine nights in July. It is a big thing for us as normaly we go to Cornwall.

We do not like it very commercialised, Im thinking Magaluf is not really for us.

We often visit the Lake District and like the open spaces. From reading about Majorca, Cala d'or is looking like it is a bit more spread out and has a rugged coastline, hopefully similar to the coastline in Cornwall.

Can anyone advise are any suitable locations?

Puerton Pollensa is nice - good mix of sandy beach, quiet residential streets, but cafes and restaurants too.

We went to cala d. Or a few years ago.Theres not much there but,the marina is worth a look for the massive floating eye sores.Probobly better though if you fancy renting a car.

I'd second Puerto Pollensa.

Or if you like rugged coastlines, the north is good - Deia, Soller, Banyalbafur are all very quaint with stunning views but rocky beaches.

Calas De Mallorca is beautiful and quiet but still plenty to do.

Is Calas De Mallorca near to Cala d'or ?

Have just looked on the map, and have found that the two resort are near each other. Have you stayed at Calas de Mallorca ?

I am hoping to find a place with lots of coast to discover without all the shops.

We stayed at Can Picafort, a bit south of Port de Pollensa. Smaller town but I liked the beach more.

Port de Soller is really nice but I found the beach too enclosed, more like a bay.

Yes we have stayed in calas de Mallorca twice, not at the most salubrious hotel, but three star cheap and cheerful AI the Hotel Samoa. It was cheap enough that we didn't begrudge going out and paying for meals but of good enough quality to stay in and eat for the odd night too.

Always holiday'd in Cornwall too, till 4 years ago, went to Puerto Pollensa for a week ... been back every year since. Lovely resort. Check out Puerto Pollensa.com for more information.

Dont fancy cornwall this year after watching the TV programme 'the year Britain flooded' .

Can you imagine being on a flooded caravan site for your main holiday.

I definately fancy some sunshine this year. Puerto Pollensa.com looks lovely. My favorite place is St Ives in Cornwall although a bit too busy. St Agnes is lovely, on the cliff top walk..

So after visitn Puerto pollensa were you converted ?

Puerto Pollensa is beautiful. We've been the last 2 years on the bounce and going again this year. You won't be disappointed. Great beach, great restaurants and lovely people.

Soller is lovely - beautiful town a couple of km inland, with a lovely port and beach too. V close to the mountains for exploring too - really beautiful scenery. It's not quite as touristy as Pollensa - which is also lovely, but I prefer Soller.

Pollensa old town (10 mins n car from Puert Pollensa beach) is amazing (beautiful as well as wonderful food) and really child- friendly. We had one of best hols EVER when our DSs were 3 and 18 mos. also took DS1 to Cala d'Or when he was 9 mos and again - superb. Can't go wrong with either - enjoy!

Yes converted totally. I have been holidaying in Cornwall all my life, near Sennen cove, it is lovely but the last 5/6 years we have always had terrible weather so decided to bite the bullet and go abroad, a very close friend of mine had always said I should go to puerto pollensa, sadly she died very suddenly, the following year I booked to go and have never looked back. I persuaded my parents to come, they also only ever went to Cornwall and had not been abroad for 40 years, they have been back the last two years and booked again this year as they love it too. I am a single mum, at Easter I am taking my two dds (12 & 14) for a few days on our own. It is very safe and my dds love it too. I book everything independently flights, hotel or apartment and transfers, so if you do decide to go, and need some advice I am happy to help

i was in callas de mallorca a few years back and it was really quiet - the small town only had a few resturants and pubs and the usual touristy tat shops
most of the hotels around were AI so not much call for lots of resturants but i did enjoy the holiday, depening on what hotel you are in some of them you have quite a lot of steps to get down to the beach

emmamegham Do you find booking everthing independently cheaper ? I have paid for the flights and are now saving for the Hotel.

Do I wait 6 weeks before for a good deal or if you do this there is not much left, just the holidays people dont want. The Hotel prices ( for the nice hotels ) seem expensive at the moment. Which sites do you book your hotel throught ?

I tend to check out reviews on trip advisor then look on trivargo.co.uk for the best deals. Yes definately cheaper, as I am on a tight budget. With regards transfers I tend to use resort hopper which is much cheaper than taxis, although if there is a few of you taxi wld perhaps not work out much more, when parents come too we usually do taxi as they are elderly. I find apartments sometimes work out cheaper than hotels. There are lots of websites for these. Depends what you like and how many of you there are. happy to help

What about the booking now or 6 weeks before ? Have you done both ? Do the prices come down, or are you left with something you dont really want ?

I dont think prices come down during July maybe in low season they would, I would book now to be on the safe side. I have booked through booking.com this year they take 20% at time of booking, balance when you check out, which helps with the finances. You are more likely to get last minuite deal with apartments.

We went last August with a new baby and a 4 year old. It was ideal. Short flight etc.

We stayed in protur palmeras playa sa coma and cannot reccomened it highly enough. It has been reccomened to us by a friend. It's a Thomson/ first choice hotel but we couldn't get a package for the dates we wanted so we ended up booking our flights with Thomson and accommodation direct with hotel.

We stayed all inclusive which saved is a lot especially with drinks and ice cream for kids.
