Where to go for 6 weeks in Summer with Kids??

DH gets a sabatical next year of 6 weeks paid holiday. (horray) We are thinking of going somewhere for at least 4 weeks. Any recommendations, obviously with cheapish cost of living. Kids will be aged 6. Where do you recommend and without political conflict.

I'd go to New Zealand, I think. Their winter, but that would make a longish holiday let much cheaper. Cost of living pretty reasonable compared to UK, I hear! And I'd tour about and see masses, and come back with a couple of stop-offs to see interesting places along the way.

Funny we are thinking about NZ but wondered if I would regret going their during their winter.

Don't forget if it's summer here, it's winter in New Zealand!
