The Vendee/La Rochelle without a car

I'm looking for a gite/campsite/holiday house in the Vendee, for two adults and a one year old. We're looking for somewhere that's not massively expensive and preferably with space for DS to toddle/crawl outside. It doesn't matter if it's inland or by the sea.

Our restrictions are that we're travelling from western Brittany so anything too far south of La Rochelle is out, and we need to be reasonably close to La Rochelle as we're flying home from there. We'd also prefer to stay in a town/small campsite rather than a big campsite/resort type affair, but my husband may just have to suck it up if there's nowhere else! Also, we'd rather not have to hire a car, so need to be somewhere a short-ish bus journey to the nearest station.

Can anyone suggest anywhere? We're going in early June if it makes a difference.

Il de Ré is great, think you can get a taxi/bus from La Rochelle airport. Lots of campsites (we stayed at Interlude with a 2 yo ) and there are loads of cycle paths so you can hire a bike and trailer and get around. Not too frantic in June, a beautiful spot.

Il de Ré is a good idea if you don't want to hire a car. How are you travelling from Brittany?
