Family friendly beach within a couple of hours drive of San Francisco?

We are flying into San Francisco and would like to spend a week on a beach (but not have to drive too far to it) before setting off for a couple of weeks seeing Grand Canyon, Yosemite etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations for beaches/hotels please? Thanks

The sea off that part of the coast is freezing, you really have to go all the way south to LA

Lots of lovely beaches round Santa Cruz and Monterey. Don't know about North of San Fran though, but sure beaches up there are as nice.

Another vote for Monterey.

Would also highly recommend the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
