Travelling to the Lake District on a bank holiday Sunday - how bad will the traffic be?

Just that really - we're planning to travel from Galloway Forest Park to Lake Windemere on the Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend.

I've heard horror stories of traffic in England on bank holidays around popular spots so could anyone tell me how bad it's likely to be?

Thanks!

The main problem with bank hol road travel is volume of vehicles and risk of accidents blocking roads which causes tail-backs.

In my experience, the Friday and the Monday are the worst days to travel on a bank hol week-end. I wouldn't personally choose to go anywhere on these days, but if you pick your route carefully and avoid any roadworks you might be O.K. on the Sunday. You can check for roadworks before you go.

Thanks Girlywhirly, we're stuck with those days unfortunately but that doesn't sound as bad as I thought it might be.!
