Getting around New York with a baby

We're going next week with our 1yo and I'm slightly worried about htravelling in cabs. Apparently children under 6 need to travel in a car seat but we don't want to take ours with us. Does anyone have any experience of this?

subway and buses are easy ..i used to nanny in manhattan and hardly ever used taxis with the kids they used to terrify me! its so much cheaper to travel on public transport there as well

where are you staying in manhattan? i used to walk alot.its great fun and nice to cut through the park

littlestar · 21/04/2006 09:02

we're staying in Central Park. I'm sure we're mostly going to walk everywhere although we probably won't use the subway much as we'll be with a wheelchair user most of the time. I was mainly thinking about how we'll get from then airport to our hotel. But I've just found the NY cabs website and it says under-7's can sit on an adult's lap.

I mean near Central Park, not in it! Grin

New York taxis can be very scary drivers!! - They are also the most unhelpful when you are struggling with baby, pram etc - much better to mak use of buses and subway etc

I used cabs with my then 10 mth old and it was fine
No seat needed

swedishmum · 21/04/2006 10:16

We used buses, subways and taxis (and a limo) with dd who was 6 weeks at the time. Beware the disabled access on subway - at one point somwhere it took us down some steps which was fine with the buggy but would not have been with a wheelchair! I seem to remember the wheelchair access subway stations being clearly marked on the subway map.
We chose a limo from the airport as there were 6 of us - too many for a cab.

littlestar · 21/04/2006 10:52

swedishmum, I like the sound of a limo! Did you book it before you went?

Just that morning - dh is very last minute! Don't think it cost much more than 2 taxis we would have needed. Dh got someone from their office in NY to recommend a firm but can't remember which it was now. Certainly got the holiday off to a good start for the kids, and cool to be met by driver at arrivals!
Better than last time I went with dh and driver couldn't even find our hotel - W in Times Sq which is quite well known...

Thanks sammac, I have just booked a limo from that company - they sound great and as swedishmum says it's not much more expensive than 2 cabs. We're not going to tell my mum so it will be a big surprise when we get to JFK. Thanks swedishmum for suggesting a limo! I'm getting really excited now!Wink
