Scotland - easy reach of Edinburgh - suggestions welcome

I'm not big on Scottish geography and certainly don't know anything about the areas surrounding Edinburgh.

We want to go away in October half term - to Scotland, preferably in a cottage in a nice location (coastal would be lovely) with lots to do and not toooo far from Edinburgh as we have friends there that we want to see. Want to be within an hour of Edinburgh I guess.

Really, any suggestions on locations would be much appreciated since I have no clue where would be most appropriate.

East Neuk of Fife (Crail, Anstruther, St Andrews, Elie)
East Lothians - North Berwick
They all fit the bill (coastal, within an hour of Edinburgh)
Watch though as Scotland seems to start shutting down in October.

North Berwick differnt from Berwick (upon Tweed) thou' GDG.

Nice 'wee' place to stay is Coldingham Bay about 45 mins from Edinburgh - not sure it would meet your plenty to do criteria but does have a stonking beach.

East Coast tends to be windy in October (well all year TBH) and can be chilly......

St Andrews would be nice and you could get the train from Leuchars into Edinburgh as well as drive if you wanted.

Gullane in East Lothian is lovely too!

You could consider the Stirling area - easy to get to Edinburgh and also places Loch Lommond and the Trossachs and Glasgow within easy reach. All are around an hour away. But not costal if that is your ideal.

Yes, I love St Andrews - beach and lovely town, but didn't realise it was within easy reach of Edinburgh.
