Woodberry Common - a huge out of town discount park. It's about a half an hour bus ride from the bus station. You can get tickets there.

Sorry - am crap at links!

NorfolkTurkey · 17/04/2006 14:28

Oh yes, there is also a huge shopping mall in queens, but can't remember the name of it!

Turquoise · 17/04/2006 14:37

Go to Century 21 - opposite Ground Zero. Give yourself at least 4 hours and DONT go on a saturday.

Lovely home stuff at Restoration Hardware and Crate and Barrel, and best underwear in the world at Victoria's Secret.
Have fun!
Envy

Turquoise · 17/04/2006 14:39

Victoria's secret -As in cheap, everyday underwear I mean - like M&S used to be. Just nice, pretty cottons etc and bras that fit, cheap.

NorfolkTurkey · 17/04/2006 14:58

I second Victoria's Secret! I'm planning to stock up when I go to Las Vegas in June!

sunchowder · 17/04/2006 15:12

Blommingdales will be close to you on 59th and 1st or 2nd (haven't been to NY in yearsbut I loved it when I went). If you can get down to the canal street area you will find all these street vendors and get fabulous designer purses for $25 to $45!!! They sell you the bag and then they give you the designer badgeit is really fun!

Hate Old Navy, The Limited kids, and The Childrens Place - things rarely lasted more than a couple of washes, elastic in waists twisted etc.
Makeup's dirt cheap too - Mac, Estee Lauder etc - Sephora is good for Benefit.
Williams-Sonoma is lovely for kitchen/foodie presents/.

sammac · 17/04/2006 20:33

Sephora for make-up, all the brands and more. Got loads of mac stuff last week for about £50. Chinatown full of cheapies- like bags, watches and you keep getting asked if you want chanel or prada from people on the street. We didn't take them up on, but apparently you get taken upstairs, doors locked and then they bring the bags out.

A great shop that I found for buying things for dd was called Strawberry, clothes and general stuff like sunglasses, bags, all really cheap.
Hugely recommend going up to the Top of the Rock for views, especially at sunset.
Everywhere felt really safe even at night- it's quite light now in the evening- about the same as here.
Go to the shops in Soho for some unusual ones and check out a store called Anthropologie, clothes and gorgeous homeware.

And make use of your hotel concierge- they are in the know about where to go eat- we had some excellent meals. I can recommend some if you like- I think I was quite close- I was on 54th between 6th and 7th.

Gem13 · 17/04/2006 21:53

Massive Old Navy down in SoHo - great for kids clothes, beach clothes, linen.

There is a big Banana Republic almost opposite where I shopped next to Richard Curtis and Emma Freud the weekend Notting Hill opened! Oh, that was too long ago...

Gem13 · 17/04/2006 21:56

My Old Navy linen trousers from 1999 are still going strong Smile and the trendy t-shirts (read - worn a lot) I bought in the US in 2004 are still looking good.

Piffle · 18/04/2006 13:56

Oooooh @ sephora
Am going to need 76 pairs of arms to get my haul out of there!
Was not sure about Gap. thx for answering that one for me!
Food - would dig a decent Thai place tip :) otherwise we're going to wing it day on day.
The lack of kettles and tea in rooms is causing me serious panic attacks though LOL
