3 weeks till our grand adventure begins...

I can't believe it but our big trip starts in three weeks time.

We are all so very excited. DS1 is preparing what he wants to take with him (he will have his own bag). DS2 doesn't understand but when I ask him where do aeroplanes go - he points to the sky and very excitedly says "byebye".

So 3 weeks left of Mumsnet - and then I'll be having a 6 months break. I have been around for nearly five years, it'll be strange not relying on this forum for advice on a lot the issues in my life.

I have lots of catting to do, for those of you who posted on my other thread.

Omg, just one week????? Fantastic! Smile

I'm still in Scotland, couldn't go back to WA yesterday as dd2 decided to have tonsillitis instead. Was supposed to be going on Monday but no flights so it'll be Tuesday now.

dejags - that sounds just fabulous and your kids are really going to treasure their memories (well, for the youngest the pictures later in life). I think you and your husband are amazing for doing this - what a great adventure. I'm from the states and as for campground sites - just get a book when you arrive of campsites across the US and call ahead a few days so you can always have a spot. I did a lot of cross country travel with my grandparents when I was younger and we frequently didn't have a spot other than a grocery parking lot if we didn't book a few days ahead... I think there is a website for KOA campgrounds and you can make on-line reservations... You may want to check it out. Have a great time! I think I'll be following you on your blog while you're gone... :) Jen

Dejags, I'm v excited for you and your family. Know exactly how you must be feeling now. We're spending this weekend thinking 'this time last year'...(we set off on 2 May 2005)

One thing that we wished we'd done on our way round was take a photo at every playground we visited. I know it sounds daft but we visited so many and would have been a fun way of remembering, in addition to all the other pics we took.

We'll follow the blog. Good luck. Have a wonderful time.

LadyTophamHatt · 29/04/2006 13:55

Hi All,

Quick update from New York.

I never ever knew how really wonderful my kids can be. They have taken everything in their stride. They are sleeping well and behaving beautifully. Our first longhaul (Cape Town to Heathrow) was pretty dismal. I made the mistake of putting DS2 in his car seat which meant he had no legroom once the kind gent in front put his seat back. So he screamed - for a long time. There are also now regulations in place which meant that I could not stand with him in the galley - result - many people around us who didn't get much sleep.

Besides this we have been going great guns - we spent five days in London, we went to the Science Museum, which the kids adored and saw friends.

We flew to New York on Monday - it was a day flight and an absolute doddle compared to the previous flight. DS2 slept most of the way and DS1 just played with his ipod or watched movies. Since being in NY we have been to the Zoo, on a hop-on-off bus trip, been to the Statue of Liberty and to Chinatown and Little Italy. Our accomodation is ok - $130 per night for a two bedroom apartment (ha - it's more like a two bedroom closet) is pretty good for NYC. It's clean, central and the kids each have a bed in their own room.

In short - we are having an absolute ball and long may it last.

Update soon
love
Dejags

Have read all the threads here and looked at your website dejags....I have so much admiration for you and am so envious at the same time!! LOL

It is what most of us dream of doing but either dont have the guts, get up and go, money or a mixture of them all.

Am going to keep tabs on your journey...sounds like a breeze so far to New York!

Hello!
Where are you now? Is it very excitiing? How is your winnebago?

Earlybird · 30/05/2006 08:16

Yes, please do let us know how you're getting on. I've got the blog bookmarked, but see it hasn't been updated for 10 days. Is everything OK?

dejags · 01/06/2006 03:45

Hi,

we are all doing very well. DS2 has come down the chicken pox today - aaargh! At least I know it'll all be over in the next five days.

We are in New Mexico at the moment. Santa Fe is a wonderful old spanish town. We are all having a great time.

I have started homeschooling DS1 in earnest and I think we are doing well together. It is amazing how much more insight I am getting from teaching him than I ever could just talking to him before and after school. By the end of this trip I'll have a sound idea of what sort of school he needs in the new year.

Can't believe we are nearing the end of our stay in the USA - it's gone so quickly. We have just two weeks left and just 10 days left in the RV.

I would most definitely recommend a RV trip for those with young kids. It's flexible and the kids always have their things, food, nappies etc with them no matter how much you move about. Not to mention the fact that the children love it. Last weekend we were in a campsite for the US Memorial Day holiday - there were wonderful activities for the littlies including a night time lollipop hunt (with torches), a pyjama party, pool games and an ice cream party.

Anyway will go and updat the blog now.

Take care
dejags
