anyone got a motorhome?

holidays are turning into a bit of a nightmare for us as ds1 freaks out. We thought about buying a static in France to see if he could get used to one place, but we have a problem with static holidays in that he spends the whole time sitting in the car (a safe place I think for him). I think we would have to go a lot to get him used to the static. So instead we wondered about getting a motorhome then it doesn't matter if he's sat in the car, and we could use it a lot. Anyone got one? Anyone had a disaster with one? Any tips?

My parents had one when I was between 3 and 10 years and it was the best thing ever. It was also our family car and dad used to drive it to work and park it in the work car park LOL.

I don't know anything about autism, but I really liked the security of knowing what my bed would be like and where everything was. When we changed to a car and stayed in different places I went through a very nervous stage and vomited everywhere each time we moves hotels. I'm sure this was connected to being completely out of my comfort zone.

Off topic, but my dad used to be able to drive us to Cornwall fast asleep in the double bed - no car seats in those days. Peace and quiet and no "are we nearly there yet".

I want a motor home now.

Yep, we have a very very old VW camper, and are absolutely loving it. Took our daughter camping when only a few months, but then at that age it doesn't really matter where they sleep does it; now that she is getting on for 2 she knows exactly where she is though, and although the first night is always a bit of a happening rediscovering all the corners, she doesn't have any trouble sleeping/getting used to it/etc. I'd definitely recommend it - it's known territory, and it gets you to places at the same time!

What about a caravan ? one thing to consider though is the fact that with a camper, you have to pack everything away when you want to travel anywhere, eg from site to shops. With a caravan, you can just up and leave. Also 2nd hand caravans much cheaper and no engine problems

Thanks for the replies. The trouble with a caravan is that he would just sit in the car all the time- otherwise we'd consider a trailer tent. Although I'm not that keen on towing (our car's quite small- small engine as well).

Just wish I had a spare 40 grand to spend on a luxury motorhome.

I took ds1 to look at some motorhomes at the weekend. He managed to find the hazard lights in every one

We're thinking of hiring one for a week at easter to see how we get on.....
