I think there is a good shoe shop that does start-rite in one of the side streets off the main shopping street in Carlisle, it's been recommended by my local shoe shop in Moffat who has just stopped doing kids shoes.

There is 'Shoe Den' at the bottom of the Lanes leading onto Lowther Street? it's only been there a year and does different brands including European and is Independent....
Debenhams has a nice range of clothes(or is that classed as high street?
There used to be a little shop down the alley near House of fraser but i'm not sure if it's still there...
alternatively there is 'Fleglings' on the High Street in Wigton(about 8 miles)WEST of carlisle on the A595...
Hope that helps.....are you a new local or just visiting??

Thanks lilliput..I used to get the boys shoes in Moffat which was a great little shop..it's a shame she is no longer doing kids shoes..will give the shoe den a try.
Chatee..thanks for all info..from Dumfries but it's rubbish for shoes..so limited so a jaunt on the train to Carlisle is looming. DS's are now at right age and I thought it would be fun. Only reason I was looking for a 'posh' clothes shop is that my DS is about to be christened and I know some of these shops do fancy outfits. Will ask around when I get there..no car so can't get to Wigan..thanks anyway.
Oh...any soft play areas I can spend an hour in?? Rumble in the JUngle..is that ideal?

hi winniewoo,
how old are your ds's?
tumble in the jungle is opposite the market(just along from debenhams)and is fine...although i have never had anything from the cafe

There is also Bitts Park(behind the castle)if the weather is fine(although i don't know what the play area is like at the mo as we haven't been yet)but it's a nice walk around and somewhere to play football or just let off steam outdoors...
or even...
