Gap Year Safety

Am I being paranoid, but in today's globalized world which appears to have dangers around every corner (thanks Daily Mail), should I be getting some security advice for my eldest prior to his adventure?

There are companies which offer this sort of advice. A lot of it is common sense, but taking the time to think about risks and how to mitigate them is IMHO worthwhile generally as a useful life skill, and just before a gap year is a good time to do it.
