We went a while back.It had a great northern European flavour.
Fantastic buildings,great cafes and restaurants.
I know they have massive flea marlets there a few times a year.

Modern art museum (outside the city centre - we had a car, but I think there are buses) is very good (but don't under any circumstances risk the toilets!). Lovely quiet town centre to ramble around. Cheap, clean, fast, regular metro system.

Aux Moules on the main pedestrian drag (Rue de Bethune?) for the best moules frites in town in fab art deco setting.

Yes, go!

I worked there as a nanny and it is a really nice city, I am sure you would love a weekend break there :)

Museum is best in France outside Louvre, apparently.

Cadogan Guide to Short Breaks in Northern France has a good chapter on Lille (as well as a lot of other, excellent recommendations for weekends across Normandy, Picardy, Nord, Pas de Calais etc)

We have not done Lille yet but really want to go. I think you have to make sure you see the Old Town as well as the modern bit round the station.
