the above says it all!! We have the chance of a long weekend away from our five children in June. Hubby is loathe to leave them as one is Special Needs but if I can produce a romantic hotel in a lovely location I'm so hoping he wont be able to resist!!! Any ideas PLEASE!!!

If you've got cash to splash Sharrow Bay Hotel on the banks of Ullswater is amazing. We stayed there for 2 nights on our honeymoon- then spent the rest of the week in my mum's caravan Grin as we couldn't afford any more!! Fantastic food, really gorgeous rooms and staff who make you feel like royalty. Also brilliant location.

The Drunken Duck and Linthwaite House both look nice, never been to either though.

Sally...when did you go to Sharrow Bay?

collision · 17/03/2006 23:46

....as it is now APPALLING and DH and I cannot believe how much money we spent on something so awful!

It is the only time DH has emailed the Good Food Guide to complain about the food!!

UGH!

Someone I know stayed at the Drunken Duck and recommended it. They have a website www.drunkenduckinn.co.uk In June rooms range from £120 to £220 per room per night for a weekend stay, including breakfast, afternoon tea, newspaper and VAT. Quite fancied it myself for a romantic weekend away.

Oh no collision! That's awful!! It used to be run by an elderly gay couple who were lovely. Sadly both have now died so maybe the hotel's been sold off to a chain or something. How disappointing. What was wrong with your food?

collision · 18/03/2006 10:41

The old chaps have now died!

The food was overcooked and on the basis there were 5 chefs for 10 people it was just awful. It was only when we got home and re-read what we had eaten that we remembered there were supposed to be truffle flavours in a couple of things that we couldnt taste. It was a disappointment.

Haven't been but have read good things (if you are willing to splash out) www.thesamling.com.
