Hotel in or near Exeter

I am looking for a hotel/B and B for next Saturday night either in Exeter city centre or it could be in the countryside to the north of Exeter if there was decent food served and nice countryside for walking in. Everywhere I've looked at seems to be full ( perhaps there's something going on in Exeter next weekend). Does anyone know of anywhere they could recommend please?

Hotel Barcelona in Exeter is lovely. Used to be the eye infirmary.

Thank you, it looks lovely but also seems to be full! I'll phone later to see if it's just their online booking saying that.

I didn't realise Hotel Barcelona had reopened. It is/was gorgeous!
The Southgate Hotel is decent. Ask for a room above the most basic as I think they haven't finished refurbing the 'classic' or 'standard' rooms yet.
Also have a look at Southernhay Hotel. I haven't stayed there but it is just about the newest boutique type hotel in Exeter and in a good location for town and eating out. It's almost next door to a lovely basement/cellar restaurant called Rendezvous which is very much worth a visit.

It could be full with parents dropping off students for uni? I think Exeter's freshers week starts about then.

Lifeisontheup · 10/09/2012 08:25

It's freshers week next week, very difficult to find any hotels in Exeter then as we found out last year.

Pagwatch · 10/09/2012 08:29

We are staying at the Abode, opposite the Cathedral, next week when we take ds1 back to uni.
We booked it ages ago as the students all go back over the next week or two

Pagwatch You are more organised than me, I have to drive there and back in a day. Rather think our DS's know each other. Smile

TwinkleReturns · 10/09/2012 08:40

yep its Freshers crowds and last minute holidayers. The Southgate is always used by coach parties so can be a bit nightmarish to get into sometimes. Others have good suggestions. Id phone round to see if there's been any last min cancellations.

Pag your DS isnt the lad with 6" mohiccan is he?

Pagwatch · 10/09/2012 08:50

It's not me being organised - that would be the stuff of miracles!

Dh is driving ds and all his shite stuff up to his new house. I am following on the train with the other two after they do their Saturday stuff and we all head back in the car on sun

Lifeisontheup · 10/09/2012 08:55

Just showed DS your profile page and he said ' that's ......' . I recognised the tie. They have bumped into each other at Exeter but are doing totally different subjects. Not going to mention MN to him though, he'd probably die of embarrassment!

Another Exeter mum here. DH is driving DS1 back on Saturday am. We figured there was not enough room in our volvo XC90 even with the roof rack on to fit me in.

lifeisontheup did you not realise its our job as parents to embarrass them?

OP when we visit DS we have stayed at the Mecure close to the town centre. On future visits we will probably stay at the Jurys as DS's new squat/flat is in the fast food end of town.
