How much is a super tight budget? How long are you going for and where? Do you have family/friends you will stay with or will you have to fund all accommodation, food, etc? Will you have a credit card in case of some emergency?

Budget not exactly decided yet but it will be for our 'honeymoon' next summer. We don't know anyone over there will be paying all accom ourselves. I lived in Thailand in 2009 and lived soooo cheaply, but I was single then! From what I gather living costs are relatively similar in Malaysia which is why I'm thinking it could be an option once we've paid for flights.
Wanting to stay for about 2.5 weeks july/aug next year (yes rain season :( )

We found Malasia quite reasonable n general that was a good 6-7 yrs ago now. We did a 3 center trip KL, Panang and Lankawi.
Eating out is very cheap especially if you find where the locals go. We stayed in 4-5 star hotels which were much less expensive than this country.
Bear in mind that it can be very hot and humid.

We've just returned from KL, Malaysia having spent almost 4weeks there in August.

Very reasonably priced, and it only rained for cca 2hr per day, humidity can be a pain but most places are fully air-conditioned for when you're avoiding the sun....Cracking weather and lots for children to do there too.

We'll be relocating there in 2013.
