Nice place to stay around Malaga or Murcia?

After a difficult time recently, DH, DD1 (2yrs) and i are planning a holiday in early October. We would like somewhere warm, 3-4 hours by air from the UK, close to a beach, and with a bit of character. So we are thinking of South East Spain; flying into Murcia or Malaga.

We would greatly appreciate any suggestions for accommodation ? nice areas to stay and/or self-catering recommendations.

I stayed in Competa last year, I liked it.
