Tamz77 · 11/03/2006 16:44

Looking for advice on flying ideally from Scotland to Sydney, Australia, prob in the autumn (Oct/Nov), myself and ds who will be 3.2/3.3. We have family there so only need flights, but what is the cheapest option?

Thanks for all help!

Expedia.co.uk may be a good place to start re flights but think you will find you're going to have to travel from your local airport to Heathrow for the onward flight to Sydney.

the cheapest option would be to fly from london (sorry), its usually more expensive to fly locally.
October is a reasonably cheap month to fly to Aus.
Do not buy direct from airline, its always cheaper to use people like ebookers/travelbag/trailfinders/sta travel

If you need any more help let me know

actually where are you in scotland? Both Emirates (great airline) and Quantas (not so great) fly from Glasgow from £742 for an adult fare.

or quantas and ba go from Edinburgh from £728 but they are not as good as emirates

I went a few years ago alone dh looked after ds x2 for 3 weeks!! I phoned round those adverts you get at the back of the Weekend papers although Trailfinders (branch on Sauchiehall St, Glasgow) were almost as cheap and eventually got a really good deal can't remember exactly how much (but around £600) flying in Dec from Edinburgh. I flew on a tiny plane to Paris and then BA/Quantas to Sydney via Singapore without a stopover. Quantas were great but BA weren't so great. Heard great stuff about Emirates so it may be worth flying with them if the difference in price isn't too much. Have a great holiday whatever.

BA don't fly directly to Sydney from Edinburgh any longer. They will fly you to Heathrow from Edinburgh for the onward flight to Sydney.

Emirates are great to fly with, also we flew to Oz with Singapore, who were also good.

Hi Tamz77, bizarrely we got our cheapest quotes from travel agents rather than online esp when you factor in cost of visa etc. It was also a lot less hassle. We got identical quotes from Oz Travel (on George Street in Edinburgh) and STA and flew to Oz via London and Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific with a 2yo and 4yo last summer. Cathay were great - would def recommend. We flew ex Aberdeen. HTH

if using a travel agency - have found trail finders and flight centre the best ... ebookers - rubbish - horrible to us when we wanted to change our flights due to our baby have open heart surgery. They wanted to charge us 300 pounds a ticket to change them from Christmas ( very popular time) to April - not so popular time. Dd1's ticket was only 150 quid at the time. They basically called dh a liar when he told them about the surgery.... asking how we could prove it! They never returned phone calls, when we would phone asking to speak to a manager there was never one there - no matter what time of day or week. When we contacted Singapore direct - they changed our flights and confirmed a sky cot for us all the way to Aus and back - no charge..... brilliant service from Singapore.

Emirates and singapore are our choices for flying between aus and UK.
