We're getting the ferry to France tomorrow lunchtime. I've only just read the foreign office advice which says car insurance documents, MoT certificate and car registration documents are compulsory. I CAN'T FIND THEM!!!!!!! Are they really essential? Do they check them on the way on or off the ferry?? Have I ruined our holiday??????!??

Never been asked for them

Me neither.

You don't need them for the Ferry, but the Gendarmes have a habit of doing spot checks and can ask for your documents. That goes for all cars in France not just foreign ones.

The really important one is your insurance document. If you can't find it contact your insurance company and get them to fax you something.

You'll only be asked for them if you're stopped for a motoring offence, I think. You also need the paper part of your driving licence, which I turned the house upside down to find.

Never been asked here either - not at either end of ferry terminal.

Don't you have to carry them by law in your car incase of an accident or incase stopped by police?

Just go, it will be fine Wink

Assume you only need them if you are stopped by the gendarmes. Just drive carefully!!! Also you now need a breathalyser kit for driving in France (should be available at freey terminal, and only a few ££), a hi-viz jacket to be kept in glove compartment, not the boot, red triangle, and if you have sat-nav it musn't be able to pick up speed cameras - the last is a new law, so no idea how it is being enforced. I would assume that you can set sat navs to not identify speed cams, but not sure if this would be sufficient? Suggest you have a look at a reputable (ie AA / RAC) website on driving in France.

I'm sure it will all be OK, have a fab holiday!!

"freey" = FERRY

Thanks so much everyone. I've now found my mot... And have my insurance details on an email... No printer to print it off though...will that be ok? The only thing missing is the registration docs. Really need a holiday and would be gutted not to go... Smile
