Travel stairgates. Dangerous, waste of money or worth it?

We are staying at a holiday home that has open steps with a boxed in rail but the steps have gaps in. I considered packing a travel stairgate to prevent ds 2 from falling down them. Reviews on amazon are good but some said they are no protection for a determined/ strong toddler at the top of stairs.

Would like to hear if anyone else has good / bad experiences with travel gates to help me decide.

Ours was fine but I would put it on a doorway, rather than the top of the stairs. It'll be easier to fit securely and if he does manage to pop it out it won't be dangerous.

Having said that, we had the lindam one and DP had to take it off in the morning because I wasn't strong enough to do it!

Thanks, it would help keep him in at night. Last holiday he tipped his cot over!

Was looking at the lindham one. Is it lightweight enough to pack? Hope so!
