I would recommend via Bristol, but if you really want to avoid you could go down A34 to pick up A303 near Winchester........but then you have to go round Oxford! If you are on M5 all the way it is usually OK, it is the M4 interchange that can be tricky. We have holiday lets in Devon, and people are usually delayed on a Saturday travelling here..........not much to do about it, leave plenty of time and take lots of activities for kids. Sorry.

umm I know M5 is best but blimy always get stuch :)
We are leaving at 4am to get to M5 for 6am then its another hour to Bristol - do you think 7ish is to late to miss traffic????

I find bristol traffic can be unpredictable but prob ok that time of morning. I live just outside bath and have family in midlands and devon. Personally we always do the A roads round oxford pretty much always a clear run and a nicer drive than the motorway
