We're planning on going to New York over half term - me, DH and DDs 9 & 14. Where would you recommend staying in terms of area? Central Park, Times Square, Broadway etc? The choice is immense and I'm feeling a bit lost.

Also, has anyone flown with United and what were they like?

You would not go wrong by staying in the Times Square area. Have a look at major chains like Marriott, Hilton etc. Tripadvisor is well worth a look as well.

United are not all that good tbh in terms of overall product but you may be lucky and have a nice aircrew.

We were there last week. Stayed at the Staybridge Suites on Times Square, got a really good deal through Expedia. To be honest it doesn't really matter where you stay as the subway system makes it really easy to get around. We flew with United as well, seats were decent, food and soft drinks were included (but alcohol had to be paid for) and there was a decent choice of films to watch during the flight. If you go to the Empire State Building be sure to get the express tickets, yes it costs extra but it is well worth it. We walked straight in but the normal queue stretched to well over 2 hours wait time.

Have taken your advice and booked a hotel near Times Square. Staybridge is fully booked for when we want to go but hopefully this hotel will be good. Or just okay really, we don't intend to spend much time there - just sleeping :)

We flew with United from NY to Florida last month and they were fab. Don't know what they are like going from UK to NY but they beat Delta hands down.

PS Top of the Rock at sunset was my highlight as you could see the Empire State light up. Also if you plan on going to Ground Zero book your tickets online in advance.

We are going next month and got a very good deal at the tryp times square south. You may be better off getting one of the NYC city passes to save money on attractions. We're flying with delta though.
