Would love to go, looked at some packages and they were ridiculously expensive, way out of my budget.

Want to go over Christmas for 3 or 4 days.

Is it essential to do a package or could we just book flights, accommodation separately, and if so, anyone got any tips. Hotels?

We did a package. It is silly prices. You can book the bits but the flights are horribly expensice as there are not many airline that fly their (and this comes from a Finnish friend).
The advantage of a package is you get all the trips etc organised for you Not sure how you would do that on your own. I'm afraid I think its just one of those things you can't really do on the cheap!

We did it a few years ago and it was fantastic! We only did a day trip and had a great time. We gave the people there the letters that DCs had written to Father Christmas, and then when they met him, he had their letters that they thought they had put in the letterbox addressed to him at the north pole (I switched them and they posted empty envelopes!).

I wouldnt book a day trip though, I heard of people who booked a day trip, their flight was delayed because of bad weather, and when they finally got there, they only had about two hours and didn't have time for all the activities.
