Travelling by taxi in Northern Portugal with 20 month old

Hello
We will be needing to take taxis whilst on holiday in Northern Portugal. What do we do about a car seat for our toddler (20 months old)? Can't face taking massive car seat with us but not sure taxis will be equipped. Anyone got experience of this please? Is it possible to travel with toddler on lap? Is it safe?? Is it best to use seat belt or not in this case? Any guidance warmly appreciated. Thanks

My feeling is:

Take a car seat - you cannot reliably hold a child on your lap. Nor is it safe to put the belt round you and your child.

However, you may not want to take your top of the range ISOFIX seat and base - consider taking something that meets safety standards but is cheaper and lighter and can easily be fixed in with a seat belt.

Halfords seat

I don't know anything about either of those two seats, but both would be significantly safer than going without.
